ʻEua

ʻEua is an island in Tonga just southeast from Tongatapu.

The island has a surface area of just under 90 square km and had a population of just over 5,000 people as of 2021.

It is split into Old 'Eua to the north and New 'Eua to the south.

A 2 1/2- to 3-hour ferry ride from Tongatapu is available.

Watch out for the visiting humpback whales during June to November, they often swim remarkably close to the island of ʻEua.

• -21.40157-174.908121 'Eua National Park. Tropical rainforest that is the country's only forest national park with an area of 4.51 km². Cliffs lining up along the ocean with caves and chasms. Enjoy the wildlife and trees, some of which are endangered. Its main attraction is the Big Ovava Tree which is said to be over 800 years old.  (updated Jan 2024)
