Époisses

Époisses is a small village in the Côte-d'Or department in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is famous for its eponymous cheese.

Époisses is a small historic village surrounded by farmland and rolling countryside. The village is closely associated with Époisses cheese, a soft washed-rind cheese traditionally produced in Burgundy.

The village developed around its château and church, and several historic buildings remain in and around the centre. Époisses is a quiet destination suited to visitors interested in French rural heritage, local food and Burgundy's countryside.

• The Château d'Epoisses (pictured in this article) is well worth looking at.
• The Church of Saint-Symphorien d'Epoisses is a harmonious and somewhat austere construction, with a nice 15th-century pieta inside.

• Berthaut. A shop where you can buy the famous soumaintrain cheese. Their "flamiche" (kind of pizza with soumaintrain cheese) is also a must. 

• While in Époisses, try Époisses de Bourgogne cheese, which is strong and runny and made from raw cow's milk. In addition,it comes with some bread and Burgundy wine.

• Semur-en-Auxois — Historic medieval town with well-preserved fortifications.
• Avallon — Historic town on the edge of the Morvan.
• Vézelay — Famous hilltop pilgrimage village and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Morvan Regional Natural Park — Large protected area of forests, lakes and countryside.
• Dijon — Historic capital of Burgundy and major regional city.
