The town is surrounded by the Seven Hills (Sieben Berge), which are famously said to be the inspiration for the Brothers Grimm's fairy tale 'Snow White'.

Local trains from Hanover, Uelzen and Göttingen call every hour. They take a little over half an hour from Hanover or 40 minutes from Göttingen, where you may connect from high-speed and intercity trains.

Alfeld is located on highway B 3 (Hanover–Göttingen).
