Capçaleres del Ter i del Freser Natural Park

Capçaleres del Ter i del Freser Natural Park is in Ripollès county in Girona (province) of Spain. This park high in the Pyrenees Mountains is, on his northern part ,the border with France. It has many famous mountains and the Nuria Monestir, in a secluded valley which can only be accessed by train. It also includes the ski resorts of Nuria and Vallter2000.

The Park occupies 14,750 hectares, distributed between the municipalities of Queralbs, Setcases, Molló, Vilallonga de Ter, Ribes de Freser, Pardines and Planoles; all municipalities in the Ripollès region. It extends to the upper valleys of the Ter and Freser rivers in Girona, around the enclaves of Núria and Ulldeter. The north side it's also the border with France. In the french side of the border there is the 42.5088892.1219441 Regional Natural Park of the Catalan Pyrenees.  (updated Sep 2026).

The main entrances to the park are Vallter-Ulldeter area and Ribes de Fresser-Nuria area. Also Espinavell near Molló, and Planoles.

Acess from France is difficult, despite the north part of the park sits in the french border, as you have to cross de Pyrenees Rim.

It includes territory belonging to the Ter and Freser Headwaters area (85%) and also to another area of ​​natural interest –Serra Cavallera- (1%) and incorporates areas that until now were not included in the Plan for Areas of Natural Interest (PEIN) (14%). It was declared a Natural Park in 2015. It has a special relevance for its natural and intangible heritage. Within the Park are the Vallter 2000 ski resort and the Vall de Núria.

The Parc Natural de les Capçaleres del Ter i del Freser showcases a breathtaking alpine landscape in Catalonia's eastern Pyrenees, spanning over 14,700 hectares across Ripollès municipalities like Queralbs, Setcases, and Ribes de Freser. Towering peaks exceed 2,900 meters, including Puigmal (2,913 m), Pic de Bastiments (2,881 m), Balandrau, and Costabona, framing glacial cirques, U-shaped valleys, and moraines from ancient ice ages.

Rivers Ter and Freser originate here, carving deep gorges like Roques Tot-lo-Món—a sheer 700-meter rocky wall teeming with chamois and marmots—and rapid streams that form waterfalls amid black pine forests and subalpine meadows. High plateaus feature rocky screes, tarteres, and prats alpines bursting with seasonal colors: snow-blanketed winters, verdant spring wildflowers, golden autumn deciduous groves.

Glacial lakes like those at Ulldeter and Carançà dot the terrain, alongside periglacial formations shaped by freeze-thaw cycles. Minimal human impact preserves raw wilderness around Núria sanctuary and Vallter 2000 ski resort, blending rugged geology with serene high-mountain vistas bordering France's Parc Natural Regional dels Pirineus Catalans. Dramatic elevation shifts from 1,280 to 3,000 meters foster diverse microhabitats, from rododendrons to endemics like alpine gentian.

The fauna of the park is very varied, between the altars, there is also a trobar of the ermini, the talp muntanyenc, the almesquera, the isard and the mufló.

The main species are the European honey buzzard, red kite, bearded vulture, griffon vulture, short-toed snake eagle, golden eagle, booted eagle, peregrine falcon, western capercaillie, Eurasian eagle-owl, Tengmalm's owl, European nightjar, black woodpecker, woodlark, tawny pipit, Dartford warbler, red-backed shrike, red-billed chough, ortolan bunting, rock ptarmigan, and grey partridge.

The Parc features a rigorous alpine and subalpine climate shaped by high-elevation Pyrenean peaks over 2,900 meters like Puigmal and Bastiments. Winters bring harsh cold, heavy snow, and polar-like landscapes, ideal for skiing at Vallter 2000 and Núria. Summers offer mild warmth with vibrant wildflower meadows and glacial streams, though sudden storms are common. Precipitation is year-round, peaking in spring, supporting diverse ecosystems from black pine forests to high prats. Seasonal contrasts—from snowy whites to autumn golds—define its dramatic, glacially sculpted valleys.

The Nuria Rack train line it's 12km long and climbs you 1000m in 45 minutes. It runs 10 times a day from 7:30 to 21:30 in low sesson. In high seasson adds frequencies up to 14 a day. Usually closes in November except weekends. It has 4 stops : Ribes enllaç, Ribes vila, Queralbs, Nuria.

• From Ribesaltes starts an unpaved road that runs along the south rim of the park until Tregurá near Setcases. Closed in winter. Pavement in bad condition.
• Setcases to Espinavell track. It starts 2.5km past Setcases and runs the south-east rim of the park until Espinavell and Molló. Usually closed in winter. Pavement in bad condition.
• Please note that there are NO roads to Vall de Nuria, so you can only access it by train or walking

Have in mind that the park is in a mountainous region so the final part of the itineraries are mountain roads. In fact either Nuria and Vallter are ski resorts!

• Ribes de Fresser (access to rack train to Nuria)
  • From Barcelona to Ribes de Fresser : it's 120km and usually it takes 1:45.
  • From Girona to Ribes de Fresser : it's 120km and usually it takes 1:30.
  • From Perpignan to Ribes de Fresser : it's 150km and usually it takes 2:10.

• Vallter
  • From Barcelona to Vallter : it's 152km and usually it takes 2:30.
  • From Girona to Vallter : it's 105km and usually it takes 1:50.
  • From Perpignan to Vallter : it's 156km and usually it takes 2:15.

GR 11 or Pyrenee way. The GR 11 goes from Cantabric sea to Mediterranean sea and crosses the park east to west. It's a high mountain route.

The Park imposes no general entry fees, allowing free access to its trails, valleys, and peaks for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Specific restrictions apply to motorized access on roads like Fontalba and Daió, regulated by seasonal permits to protect wildlife and minimize erosion—details via official brochures. ​

The Núria Valley rack railway and Ulldeter cable car charge separately (around €20-35 round-trip), as do ski lifts at Vallter 2000 during winter. Free parking is available at trailheads, but overnight camping requires park authorization. Hunting in the overlapping Freser-Setcases National Game Reserve needs special licenses. Always check visitor centers in Queralbs or Setcases for updates on trail closures or fire bans. Respect "zero footprint" sustainable guidelines.

This park has a lot of areas not accessible by car. The whole Nuria valley can only be reached by train, as there are no roads nor tracks.Just a path if you access walking or the train.

The floor of the valley lies about 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) above sea level and is accessible from the south via a rack railway (the Vall de Núria Rack Railway) or by foot, and from France to the north by footpaths. There are no roads to access the valley. • 42.4268732.2596074 Ulldeter. is a mountainous cirque in the Eastern Pyrenees located north of the municipality of Setcases (Ripollès). Its name comes from the fact that it hosts the source of the Ter river (In catalan: ull= eye Ter=the Ter river , Ulldeter = The Eye of the Ter river). United to the northeast with the cirque of Morens (and both limited to the north by a ridge that separates them from the Conflent and, therefore, from the Tet valley), it is framed by the Pic de la Dona to the east (2,704 m), the Pic de Bastiments (2,881 m) to the north, and the Gra de Fajol (formed by the Gra de Fajol de Dalt, of 2,706 m, and the Gra de Fajol de Baix, of 2,536 m), to the southwest. These are separated by the Coll de la Marrana (which separates the Gra de Fajol Alt from the Pic de Bastiments), which gives access to the Freser valley.  (updated Aug 2025)

Nuria-Ribes area

• 42.3832662.1167916 Puigmal. It stands as the highest (2909.8m) and westernmost of the peaks that make up the so-called Gran Olla, which surrounds the Vall de Núria. It is a wide and rounded peak, and its ascent is easy if the weather conditions are not very adverse. At its summit there is a wrought iron cross. Classic route: From the sanctuary, we will start a simple path in a westward direction through the Sant Gil forest, from where we will follow the course of the torrent entering the coma of l'Embut and finally reaching a rain gauge. From here the path becomes rockier, with a steeper slope, and we must overcome a difficult scree  (updated Sep 2025)

The site has wide views of the Serra de Montgrony and the Rigard valley, as well as the Corral Blanc refuge, parking, a picnic area and viewpoints. It is located within the Ter and Freser Headwaters Natural Park. It is also a key crossing point for the crossing between the Ulldeter cirque and the upper Freser valley towards Núria and Coma de Vaca. • 42.399352.1404423 Funnel hole (Forat de l'Embut). is a striking karst feature where a stream disappears into a network of fissures and underground passages, then emerges again beyond the mountain. The contrasting local geology explains the effect: the pale marble contains water-soluble limestone, while the darker schist does not dissolve.

Following the reference point that leaves Setcases and goes up the Carboneres stream, we find the gorges of Cossi de Batlló. Following the Setcases track to Espinavell, we can see the black pine forests of Baga de Carboners. • 1.- the pilgrims' path, which goes up from Queralbs to Núria. We are facing a path that was specially cared for by those responsible for the sanctuary and which had the particularity that in order to safeguard it, herds could not travel on it.

• 2.- path especially linked to the tradition of pilgrimage to Núria is the crossing from Ull de Ter to Núria. It was the traditional path of devotees to Núria from Conflent and Vallespir.

• There are three paths that lead from Cerdanya to Núria. 3.- the one that leaves Eina and through the valley of the same name and the Eina pass, descending towards Núria through the Coma d'Eina. The other two communication paths (4.- & 5.-) with Cerdanya pass through the Finestrelles pass and take us to the Cerdanya villages of Err and Llo.

• 6.- Pilgrimage route linked to the tradition of pilgrimage to Núria is the route that, starting from the collet de les Barraques, descends to the font de l'Home mort, in the Estremera valley, ascends to the col de Fontalba and from there heads towards the valley of Núria.

• There is another pilgrimage route, closely linked to the valley of Camprodon, which ascends the col de Tres Pics, descends to Coma de Vaca and ascends the col del Torreneules to Núria. Today this traditional route has the modern variant of the camí dels inginiers, from Coma de Vaca to les Pedrisses.

It can be walked in large parts on GR 11 or Pyrenee way. The GR 11 goes from Cantabric sea to Mediterranean sea

• Ripoll is the capital of the Ripollés county. It sits at the confluence of the Ter river and its tributary Freser, in the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees. The Monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll it's a must see.
• Camprodon is in the crossing of Vallter valley and Mollo valley. The bridge over the Ter dates from 1196
• Setcases small village dating from 965 on the Vallter valley
• Puigcerdà is a border city, but since the Schengen treaty, became the main city in the Cerdanya County. including some shared services with France like the Hospital. It is in the heart of the Eastern Pyrenees skiing region.
• Molló is located on a hill or ridge, rising above the basins of the Ritort River (to the left) and the Font Vella stream (to the right). It is a concentrated population center, documented as early as 936, the year of the consecration act of the church of Santa Cecília.
