Ramanagara

Ramanagara (ರಾಮನಗರ Rāmanagara) is a rural area surrounded by rocky hillocks, at the western outskirts of Bangalore. Rock climbing is an adventure sport that is hugely popular in Ramanagara. The eye-catching granite cliffs 60 to 70 feet in height are favorite with rock climbing enthusiasts. These are at a distance of around 50 kilometers from Bangalore, on the route to Mysore. Rock climbing is great as a hobby and it is said to be even better than visiting the gym.

It is home to some of the world's oldest granite outcrops. Ramanagara is famous for its silk market, one of the biggest in India, giving it the other name of Silk town. In Ramanagara you will get a chance for Bouldering. This is all about climbing up boulders. It's often used as training for improvement of climbing and strength skills. Then after you may go for Rappelling or Abseiling, means getting down from a steep rock with the help of a rope and safety gadgets. This uses the same techniques as mountaineering. Then you will come to our last activity which is Chimney Climbing. In this, climbing is done in the gap between two rocks. You have to use your body to crawl across and climb.

  • 2 Savandurga. A monolith and a popular trekking spot. On top of the rock, you will find a fort and a temple. The temples dedicated to Sri Basaveswara, Sri Narasimhaswamy and Sri Veerabhadraswamy, at the base of the hill also draws a large number of devotees. It was a location for the making of David Lean's movie Passage to India. There is a ₹1 entry fee to enter into Kempegowda Udyanavana. If you want to do some adventure activities, you need to get permission from the district forest officer at Ramanagara with ₹125 per head being the entry fee. There are young boys who would be willing to lead you up to the top, for about ₹50-100. However, the track is pretty straightforward and you would not strictly require a guide. The key is to follow the power lines as it leads all the way up to the top. Also, there are white coloured arrows painted on the rock at regular intervals.
