Summary

Description Castle Leod, just outside the spa town of Strathpeffer, is the home of the Mackenzie family, Earls of Cromartie and Chiefs of the Name and Arms of Mackenzie. The oldest part of the castle, the tower house, was built on the site of a Pictish fort during the 12th century; however, most of what remains dates from its rebuilding during the 17th century. In the 19th century, two extra wings were built. The grounds surrounding the castle contain some ancient trees of note.
