Summary
DescriptionLydford Early Norman Fort - geograph.org.uk - 1020064.jpg
English: Lydford Early Norman Fort The early importance of Lydford can be recognised by the fact that the Saxon settlement was the subject of a Viking raid in 997, and by this Early Norman fort, built on a promontory overlooking Lydford Gorge at some time between the invasion of 1066 and 1100. Within the fort were five buildings which were in use as granaries when they were destroyed by fire and the fort was consequently abandoned in the twelfth century.
