Summary

Description Built in 1926, this Classical Revival-style monument was designed by John Russell Pope to commemorate the victory of the United States Navy at the Battle of Plattsburgh in 1814, during the War of 1812. The monument stands 135 feet (41 meters) tall, and features a limestone-clad exterior, a decorative carved relief at the base, a stepped ziggurat-style roof, a large bronze eagle sculpture atop the monument’s roof. The monument today is one of the most prominent features of Downtown Plattsburgh due to its height, and is surrounded by a park that offers sweeping views of the mouth of the Saranac River as it flows into Lake Champlain.
