Description
English: The Colterscleuch Monument A striking 13m high monument on Dryden Knowes and eye-catching from the A7 Hawick-Langholm road. Erected in 1874 in memory of the Revd Henry Scott Riddell, who lived in the adjacent Teviothead Cottage and was minister at Teviothead from 1831. A small plaque by the entrance door reads:

THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED IN 1874 AND WAS REPAIRED IN 1998 TO MARK THE BI-CENTENARY OF THE BIRTH OF THE POET HENRY SCOTT RIDDELL

An inscription stone above the door reads:

SLEEP ON GENTLE BARD THOUGH SILENT FOREVER THY HARP IN THE HALL OF THE CHIEFTAIN IS HUNG NO TIME FROM THE MEMORY OF MANKIND SHALL SEVER THE TALES THAT IT TOLD AND THE STRAINS THAT IT SUNG
