Jõgeva is a small town in eastern Estonia, the administrative centre of Jõgeva County. It is a convenient stop on the railway between Tallinn and Tartu, and a useful base for exploring the surrounding countryside, historic villages and the western shore of Lake Peipus.
Jõgeva is known as the cold capital of Estonia. The country's official record low temperature, −43.5 °C, was recorded here on 17 January 1940.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Jõgeva developed around the railway station, which opened in 1876 on the Tapa–Tartu railway. The settlement received town status in 1938. Unlike many older Estonian towns, Jõgeva does not have a medieval old town or a major historic castle; its attractions are mainly connected with local history, literature and culture.
The town is associated with poet Betti Alver and composer Alo Mattiisen. Its agricultural surroundings are also significant: the region has a long tradition of plant breeding and farming.
Get in
[edit | edit source]By train
[edit | edit source]Jõgeva is on the railway line between Tallinn and Tartu. Trains operated by Elron connect the town with both cities and with smaller settlements along the route. Check Elron for current timetables, journey times and tickets.
The railway station is within walking distance of the town centre and several attractions.
By bus
[edit | edit source]Regional buses connect Jõgeva with nearby towns and villages, including Põltsamaa and Mustvee. Long-distance connections may also be available depending on the route and day.
Check routes and timetables through Peatus or the relevant bus operator before travelling. Services to smaller villages can be infrequent, particularly at weekends.
By car
[edit | edit source]Jõgeva is accessible by road from Tartu, Tallinn and other towns in central and eastern Estonia. A car is useful for visiting rural attractions outside the town.
Get around

A car is recommended for excursions to places such as Kassinurme, Kuremaa and Palamuse, which are outside the town.
