Khorgos

Khorgos (霍尔果斯, Huò'ěrgǔsī; also Horgos, Huoerguosi, Khorgas or Korgas) is a border town in Dzungarian, Xinjiang, China, at the main road crossing between China and Kazakhstan.

Khorgos is primarily useful as a transit point for travellers crossing between China and Kazakhstan. The Chinese border area and the town's railway station are separate locations, so allow time for local transfers.

Khorgos is on the Chinese side of the China–Kazakhstan border. The Kazakh side of the crossing is near Zharkent.

Border procedures, transport arrangements, opening hours and entry requirements can change. Check current information before travelling and carry your passport and any required visas or permits.

Khorgos Railway Station (霍尔果斯站) is served by trains from Ürümqi and other destinations in Xinjiang. The station is outside the town and border area.

• 44.157780.456571 Khorgos Railway Station (霍尔果斯站). The station is east of the border area. Continue by taxi or local transport to Khorgos town or the bus terminal.  

The bus terminal is in the Khorgos border area, close to the crossing. It is not at the railway station and is not in the town centre.

• 44.1596680.422572 Khorgos International Bus Terminal (霍尔果斯国际汽车站). Near Guomen Square and the border checkpoint. Show the Chinese name to taxi drivers.  

Buses and minibuses leave from the terminal for the Chinese border post and for Zharkent on the Kazakh side. A traveller reported paying ¥99 for a minibus to Zharkent in July 2026.

The vehicle takes passengers through the Chinese exit procedures, across the controlled border area, and onward through Kazakh entry procedures before continuing to Zharkent. Do not leave the vehicle unless instructed by border or transport staff.

Older map listings may direct travellers to a former bus station in the town centre. Confirm the destination with the driver before departing.

Taxis are the practical way to travel between Khorgos Railway Station, the town, the bus terminal and the border crossing. The railway station and bus terminal are separate locations.

Border facilities are controlled areas. Access rules and photography restrictions apply; follow local instructions and do not photograph border infrastructure without permission.

Khorgos has shops and markets serving cross-border travellers. Availability and opening hours vary.

There are few traveller-oriented food or other facilities at the railway station or immediately around the crossing. Buy food and water in Khorgos town before going to the station or border area.

The bus terminal is in the town/border area and has more nearby facilities than the railway station or crossing, but travellers should not rely on finding a full range of services there.

Accommodation is available in Khorgos town, away from the railway station and border checkpoint.

• Almaty — reachable onward through Kazakhstan
• Ürümqi — regional transport hub in Xinjiang

Carry your passport at all times and keep important documents accessible during the crossing.

Border procedures can involve long waits. Keep essential medication, water, food and phone power with you.

Do not photograph border infrastructure or officials without permission. Check visa and entry requirements for both China and Kazakhstan before starting the journey.
