[edit | edit source]Landscape
[edit | edit source]The relief is relatively smooth, altered, however, by the presence of cliffs and precipices. The central rocky platform reaches 358 m in altitude at its highest point, the Talaia.
Flora and fauna
[edit | edit source]The vegetation of the area is greatly affected by the rainfall regime and, therefore, the species that grow spontaneously there must face a period of summer drought that can be very harsh. For this reason, the plants that live there have adaptations to avoid excessive water loss. During this dry season and with a Mediterranean climate, growth is slow, especially that of trees, and, therefore, wood production is low.
The harsh environmental conditions such as the lack of water, the scarce vegetation and the abrupt relief, do not allow a rich and exuberant fauna to live there. However, this same factor is what gives interest to the original fauna that lives there, since it is formed by species adapted to these peculiar conditions. The confluence of ecological environments is also reflected in the herpetological fauna (very sensitive to these changes) so that we can find species of North African origin such as the horseshoe snake and the Iberian viper together with others of Central European nature such as the salamander and the "noia". Finally, the great development of the karst system has allowed the formation of an interesting cave life, to the point that we find endemic species unique in the world.
