Revision as of 11:31, 24 April 2022

London is one of the greatest cities in the world, as there's something for everyone to see and do. Below is a selection of walks of varying lengths and difficulty that cover the vast majority of the city as well as its suburbs as well as some of the home counties.

Transport for London (TfL) also have a selection of walks on their website, which like these walks, are of varying lengths and difficulty.

Some considerations

  • Do not feel that you have to follow or complete the walks given on this page exactly as written. If there's something interesting down a side street, or something has an 'off the route' feel, you can adapt the route as per the diversion you take (E.g. walking along a canal/river rather than a road). If you want avoid a busy road by diverting through of London's many green spaces or parks, feel free to do this as well.
  • You can also break up the longer walks into multiple sections, as most Londoners won't be walking the length of a Marathon on a regular basis! For more information, look at the last bullet point of this section.

A few things to take note of whilst walking:

  • Rush hour/peak travelling time is usually between 7AM and 10AM in the morning and 4PM and 7PM in the evening. Because of this, it's strongly recommended that you try and travel to your start point and from your end point out of these times, as trains are significantly busier at these times and train tickets are more expensive, including Tube travel. If you get an all-day travelcard specifically for London, this will also allow you to use the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), London Overground and various bus routes (including those at night) between zones 1 and 6, which will be extremely useful for the walks that end in the suburbs. You can also use one of the iconic Black Cabs by booking one in advance, hailing one on the street, or going to a designated taxi rank, which are located at many of the major railway termini. If you want a cheaper alternative to these, you can use Uber to request a taxi to your exact location. Uber also run the Thames Clippers/Uber Boats alongside TfL, which can be used as a fast way to travel along the Thames from Central London to parts of the suburbs.
    • For more information about TfL train, bus, taxi and boat services, including the Woolwich Ferry and the Tube's night service, look on the Transport for London (TfL) website. For information about mainline tickets and times, look on the National Rail and Trainline websites, the latter of which includes coach routes across the UK and international rail travel across Europe.
    • Train tickets are usually released 12 weeks in advance, or a few months in advance for coach companies, before your dates of travel, so keep watching for their release to make sure that you get them at the cheapest price. If you have a railcard, use that to reduce the price of your tickets, especially if you're buying them in rush hour/the morning and/or evening peak travelling times.
  • UK weather can be unpredictable, as a sudden downpour can dampen your plans and enthusiasm quickly, so make sure to bring an umbrella and/or raincoat. By contrast, make sure to take enough water and possibly sun cream and a hat on a warm and sunny day.
  • Sturdy, "Sensible" Footwear is strongly recommended. Whilst trainers and sandals are OK for walks in the City or West End, where you are on paved paths or pavements (U.S. sidewalks, Aus/NZ footpaths). Longer walks in London's green spaces or the country beyond the fringes of suburban Metroland, and into parts of the home counties, will take you through fields and rough terrain, where good quality walking boots are strongly recommended.
  • Be aware that major urban roads in Greater London can have issues with traffic congestion, which comes with the associated fumes. If you're coming into Central London by car, it's strongly recommended that you park outside of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and come in by public transport in order to avoid the congestion charge, particularly if you've got an older vehicle. By comparison, some streets in the outer suburbs and beyond can be highly residential in nature, and so appropriate politeness and respect of privacy is always appreciated.
  • Not all streets and paths in London and the surrounding region are public, so some may be closed at short notice. Obvious security measures like gates, barriers or legally worded signs are indicators, and evidence of 'services' in back-alleys, such as parking and waste bins, are another indication that a path may not be public.
    • For shorter distances within a residential area/community (E.g. In commuter/suburban towns or the West End), there will be plenty of people who will be willing to help you.
    • Try and avoid using an older map of Central London, as there may be some streets that may be permanently closed and/or public transport links that have ceased operations as well as potentially new transport links that started operation after the map was published.
  • Some of the cross London and long distance walks will take several days to complete, so make sure that you book overnight accommodation along the routes of these walks in manageable chunks. For more information about where to book, look up major hotel and hostel sites, in particular Premier Inn and the Youth Hostel Association (YHA), to see if there's any hotels in the area you plan to stay in. Airbnb is also a great alternative if there's no available hotels in a particular area.
    • Hotel and hostel rooms are usually a lot more expensive at the weekend and during school holidays, especially at Easter, in the summer and during half terms, so if you want to book cheap rooms, avoid these times. It also helps if you book a room in advance, as its usually a lot cheaper, especially if there are offers and discounts being offered by the hotels and hostels.

Short walks (Under 5 miles)

The easiest walks that are highly wheelchair/disability and pet friendly.

Walk 1: Paddington station to Camden Market

  2. At Little Venice, cross over the footbridge, and then turn right after this, which should take you along the Regents Canal Towpath. Just after joining it, follow the footpath onto Blomfield Road, and this should take you to the A5/Edgware Road. Here, cross over onto Aberdeen Place, and follow it until you get to a footpath taking you back to the canal.
  3. After about 100 m (330 ft), you should arrive at the B507/Lisson Grove. Cross over it, and then turn left onto the towpath that takes you pass Lisson Grove Moorings, which should be on the other side of the towpath to where you’re walking. 4. After passing under the railway bridges, follow the canal along the edge of Regents Park until you get to the Cumberland Turn Basin. When you get here, follow the canal to the left, which should take you into Camden Market.

Tube termini

The London Underground has been a vital transport link since it was first built in 1863 and has slowly expanded to meet the growing demands of the city. These walks follow the termini of each Tube line on the London Underground network.

Sub-surface lines

These lines are amongst the oldest part of the network and allowed steam trains to pull passengers across central London and into the area known as 'Metro Land'. They were build using a method known as Cut-and-cover, which is a simple method of construction used for shallow tunnels. To achieve this, a trench is excavated in a road, for example the Marylebone/Euston Road for the Metropolitan Railway between 1860 and its opening in 1863, and then it's roofed over with an overhead support system that's strong enough to carry the load of what is to be built above the tunnel. Excavation then takes place under the permanent tunnel roof, and the base slab is constructed to allow the trains to run over it. This first set of walks follows their termini, but not necessarily the exact route taht they travel.

Deep level lines

As the Tube network grew in size, the tracks were getting more clustered, and so a new method was needed to create new lines. Going underground using a tunneling method was the best option, and the City & South London Railway (Now the Northern Line Bank branch) was the first to open in 1890 using tunnel boring machines and metal plating. Since then, the construction of the underground and the technology to allow it to take place has significantly improved and has allowed the Tube to expand to its current size, particularly in the north of the city. The TfL rail links were initially built/formed to connect London's less well connected suburbs as well as taking over rail routes from mainline operators to ease congestion on not only the mainline railways, but also on the London Underground. Over the many years these have operated, they've played a vital role in creating new routes and transporting city workers and tourists alike. Some of these networks were also built on pre-existing railways, particularly the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and trams, as they were cheaper to build using railway infrastructure that's already been used for over a century, but had been closed years before. These walks follow the termini of the Docklands Light Railway, Tramlink, London Overground, Crossrail/Elizabeth Line, and the proposed cross-London route Crossrail 2.
