The 16.7 km Utö stage is one of the most varied on the entire trail and is rated challenging. It can begin at 1 Gruvbryggan ferry stop, where shops, the 1 Utö Värdshus inn and restaurant, a bakery, café, sauna, and bike rental are all on hand, or at the quieter 2 Spränga ferry stop with no services. The recommended direction is counterclockwise. From Gruvbryggan the trail heads south past the campground to a 1 Södra Fladen wetland, an experimental water-purification area teeming with birds and fish, before looping north along the rugged, technical eastern coastline with open Baltic views. The northern stretch passes 1 Barnens bad, a sandy beach with shallow water, then winds back to Gruvbryggan through forest and past the water-filled iron ore mining pits that gave the harbour its name — a reminder that Utö was central to Sweden's iron supply for nearly 700 years. The island is also the birthplace of Swimrun. The stage pairs naturally with SAT Ålö, reachable on foot via the gravel road south from Gruvbryggan.
