Guangzhou's North and East districts offer a different experience from the busy city centre, with mountain scenery, historic sites, hot springs and rural landscapes. The area covers five districts: Baiyun, Huangpu, Huadu, Zengcheng and Conghua. Visitors can explore Baiyun Mountain, learn about modern Chinese history in Huangpu, visit historic sites in Huadu, relax at Conghua's hot springs or sample Zengcheng's famous lychees in summer. As the districts cover a large area, it is worth planning visits by location.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Orientation
[edit | edit source]North and East Guangzhou covers five districts spread across the northern and eastern parts of the municipality. Attractions are widely dispersed, so visitors should plan their trips by area rather than trying to see everything in one day.
- Baiyun (白云) — North of the city centre, Baiyun includes urban neighbourhoods as well as greener areas. Baiyun Mountain is a major attraction for hiking and views over Guangzhou. The district is also home to the Memorial to the Sanyuanli People's Struggle Against the British.
- Huangpu (黄埔) — East of the city centre, Huangpu is known for the former Huangpu Military Academy on Changzhou Island, an important site in modern Chinese history. The district also has maritime and revolutionary history sites.
- Huadu (花都) — In the northwestern part of Guangzhou, Huadu combines urban areas with industrial development and access to the wider countryside. Attractions include Huadu Square and the Former Residence of Hong Xiuquan.
- Zengcheng (增城) — East of the central city, Zengcheng is known for its lychees, including the prized Gualü (挂绿) variety. The lychee season generally falls in June and July, although the exact timing varies from year to year.
- Conghua (从化) — In the northern part of Guangzhou, Conghua is known for hot springs, mountain scenery and outdoor recreation. Tianhe (Heavenly Lake) Recreation Area and Shimen National Forest Park are among the area's natural attractions.
Distances between attractions can be considerable. Check transport routes and journey times before setting out, especially for rural and mountainous destinations.
Climate
[edit | edit source]Guangzhou has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and generally mild winters. Rainfall is concentrated in the warmer months, particularly from spring into summer. Heavy rain and typhoons may affect outdoor activities, so visitors planning hikes or trips to rural areas should check the weather forecast.
Autumn is often a comfortable season for exploring the region outdoors. Spring can be warm and rainy, while summer is hot and humid. Mountainous areas around Conghua may be cooler than the central city.

Climate data are based on the 1991–2020 China Surface Climate Normals Dataset published by the National Meteorological Information Centre and accessed through the China Meteorological Data Service Centre.
As North and East Guangzhou are part of Guangzhou Municipality, climate data for Guangzhou are used as a general reference for this region. However, local conditions may vary, particularly in the mountainous areas of Conghua.
History
[edit | edit source]The districts north and east of central Guangzhou preserve sites associated with some important turning points in modern Chinese history. In Baiyun, the Memorial to the Sanyuanli People's Struggle Against the British commemorates local resistance during the First Opium War in 1841. In Huangpu, the former Huangpu Military Academy, founded in 1924, trained military officers who later became prominent figures in China's political and military history.
Huadu is the birthplace of Hong Xiuquan, the leader of the Taiping Rebellion against the Qing dynasty. His former residence offers visitors a more personal connection to this turbulent period. Together, these sites provide a useful way to explore the region's history beyond Guangzhou's better-known central districts.
When to visit
[edit | edit source]Autumn is often a comfortable time for walking and exploring the countryside. Spring is also an option, although rain and humidity can be high. Zengcheng is especially associated with lychees, which are generally harvested in June and July. Summer visitors should prepare for heat, humidity and heavy rain.
