Detail from a miniature in the illuminated manuscript Tārīkh-i Sulṭān Sulaymān by the official Ottoman historian Seyyid Lokman that is believed to depict the architect Mimar Sinan holding a wooden cubit rule. The manuscript was produced during Sinan's lifetime in around 1579; he died in 1588. The foreground of the complete miniature shows the burial tent and the funeral procession for the deceased Sultan Süleyman who died in 1566. In the background Sinan is shown overseeing the construction of the sultan's mausoleum next to the mausoleum of Süleyman's wife Hürrem Sultan who had died in 1558.
