English: This carved column capital depicts the Tarrasque, a mythical beast that combined a body shaped as a mix between a dragon and a bear with a turtle's shell, scorpion's tail, and a lion's head. In Provencal folklore, the Tarrasque terrorized the countryside but was charmed by the Christian icon Saint Martha, who brought it back to the city as a tame animal but it was destroyed by the frightened villagers. As it did not fight back, the villagers realized they had been wrong and named the town in its honor - Tarascon.
