Besides the disc motor and its centering hub, these include the laser assembly sled along with a small stepper motor driving the linear actuator. Flexible ribbon cables connect the assembly to the controller board on the bottom of the unit.

The LF-1000 is a Phase-change Dual (PD) drive compatible with two types of optical storage media. It can process rewrite-able 650 MB discs enclosed in a protective cartridge, or behave essentially like any ordinary 4x SCSI CD-ROM drive when reading CDs. Compatibility with CD-Rs is surprisingly good for a device of this age.
