Abucay is a town in Bataan, Central Luzon, the Philippines. Situated at the eastern side of the Bataan peninsula, it has natural and historic attractions, including the oldest Roman Catholic church in Bataan.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Abucay was founded by the Spanish in 1588, and hosted the country's first printing press. In 1647, the town was briefly seized by the Dutch following a bloody battle, with much of its population either massacred or deported to the Dutch East Indies. The town was devastated again during World War II in the Battle of Bataan in 1942. The Bataan Death March also passed through the town.
It is home to about 45,000 people (census, 1 July 2024) 
Get in
[edit | edit source]Abucay lies along Roman Superhighway (Route 301), the main six-lane transport artery through eastern Bataan which bypasses downtown Abucay. Bataan National Road, a narrow two-lane thoroughfare, passes through the town center. The two highways are connected to each other by capillary roads.
Abucay is connected by minibuses to the provincial capital Balanga. From Metro Manila, Genesis and Victory Liner operate daily bus trips on their way to Balanga and Mariveles.

[edit | edit source]- 1 Bataan National Park. A 23,000 hectares (57,000 acres) protected forest area covering Mount Natib, a dormant volcano with a wide caldera encompassing most of northern and central Bataan.
- Death March markers. The Bataan Death March passed through the center of Abucay, as marked by the life-size white obelisks lining the original route along Bataan National Road.

Abucay's main Roman Catholic church, established in 1588 and is the oldest in Bataan. The church also doubled a fortress during the Dutch invasion and was subsequently repaired in the Baroque style.
- 3 Pasukulan Falls, Gabon. A 60 metres (200 ft) cascade along the eastern slopes of Mount Natib.
- 4 Wawa Lati Lighthouse, Wawa. A lighthouse at the mouth of the Abucay River overlooking Manila Bay.
