Adigrat is a city in the Tigray Region of northern Ethiopia, close to the border with Eritrea. It is an important commercial and transport centre and has historically served as a link between northern Ethiopia and the Red Sea region. Adigrat lies in the Ethiopian highlands and is surrounded by rugged hills, valleys and agricultural areas. The city is an important centre for trade and services in eastern Tigray. The surrounding area is predominantly rural, with farming and livestock keeping providing livelihoods for many communities. The highland environment gives Adigrat a relatively cool climate compared with Ethiopia's lowland areas.
