Ado-Awaye

Ado-Awaye is a scenic town in Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria. It is internationally famous for hosting the Iyake Suspended Lake, one of only two documented suspended lakes in the entire world. The town is a premier hub for eco-tourism, hiking, and outdoor exploration in West Africa.

Ado-Awaye is a historically rich community nestled among massive monolithic rock formations. The primary draw is the Ado-Awaye Mountain, which served as a place of refuge for the local population during historic inter-tribal wars.Ado- Awaye founded around 1500 AD. It is famous for the Oke-Ado Mountain, which houses the mystical Iyake Lake hailed as one of only two natural suspended mountaintop lakes in the entire world. The town has a tropical climate, with the peak tourist season running through the dry months from November to March.

The Ado Awaye suspended lake is atop Oke Ado, a large hill in the mysterious town of Ado Awaiye. The town's origins stretch back to the 1500s and the tales are full of interesting twist and turns.

Ado Awaye was was founded when a prince of the Oyo kingdom was denied his right to the throne because of his "impure" blood. His mother was from Ota, and his brother was crowned in his stead. He left in annoyance for his mother's hometown and on the way he encountered people in the Ado community. They were escapees from the Dahomey war and they made him their king after learning of his heritage.

Ado-Awaye is most accessible by road from Ibadan (approximately 110 km away) or Iseyin (about 25 km away).

• From Ibadan, take the route heading northwest through Iseyin, then track southwest to reach the central community area.

Commercial vehicles and shared taxis operate regularly from the Challenge Bus Terminal or Ojoo Motor Park in Ibadan to Iseyin. From Iseyin, local transport options and motorcycle taxis (okadas) can drop you off directly at the mountain base park entrance.

The town is small enough to navigate via local motorcycle taxis (okadas). To reach the mountain attractions, visitors must travel east of the central mosque for roughly 1 kilometer to reach the designated hiking trail entrance point.

• 7.82953.43121 Iyake Suspended Lake, Ado-Awaye Mountain (1 km east of the central mosque). Daily 6AM-7PM. One of only two suspended lakes in the world (the other is in Colorado, USA). It is a breathless, deep body of water contained in a depression at the crest of a massive rock dome. Local lore says the lake is bottomless and possesses spiritual properties. Entry fee required at the base gate.  
• 7.8313.4322 Ado-Awaye Mountain Peaks, Trailhead at Mountain Base. Daylight hours. A rigorous climb up a massive geological rock dome via a designated stairway containing over 600 steps. Offers sweeping panoramic views across the Oyo State countryside. Notable sights along the trail include the "Elephant Tree" (a root formation resembling an elephant trunk) and various spiritual footprint depressions in the rock surface. Included in general trail fee.  

• Hiking and trekking: Complete the climb to the summit of the mountain. It requires a fair amount of physical stamina due to the steep steps, so bring proper footwear and plenty of drinking water.
• Camping: Wilderness camping is occasionally organized near the base or on designated plateaus with local guide permissions.

Local markets in town sell traditional southwestern Nigerian goods. You can purchase fresh farm produce, locally grown fruits, and traditional woven textiles.

Local local eateries (bukkas) serve authentic Yoruba delicacies:

• Amala and Ewedu: The signature dish of Oyo State, made from yam flour and served with a rich, delicious vegetable and gbegiri (bean) soup.
• Pounded Yam: Best enjoyed fresh with local egusi or ogbono soup.

• Fresh Palm Wine: Locally tapped and served fresh around rural points in the community.
• Bottled water and carbonated soft drinks are easily purchasable at small kiosks near the mountain base.

While major luxury hotels are a short drive away in Iseyin or Ibadan, basic guesthouses and local accommodation lodges are available for travelers staying overnight.

• Iseyin Lodging Options: Many travelers choose to hike Ado-Awaye during the day and sleep in nearby Iseyin (25 km away), which features standard amenities and stable hotels.

Mobile networks (MTN, Airtel, and Glo) are active in town, though internet data connectivity can become erratic or unstable when climbing high up on the mountain trail.

• Iseyin – A neighboring town famous for its traditional Aso-Oke weaving culture.
• Oyo – The historic capital seat of the ancient Oyo Empire, featuring traditional markets and the Palace of the Alaafin.
• Ibadan – The massive state capital, perfect for checking out Bower’s Tower and botanical gardens.
