Aidone

Aidone is a hilltop town in the province of Enna, in the heart of Sicily. Overlooking lush valleys and mountains, this quiet medieval town is best known as the modern gateway to the ancient Greek city of Morgantina, one of Sicily’s most important archaeological sites. Aidone is an ideal stop for travellers interested in ancient history, archaeology, and off-the-beaten-track destinations.

Understand

[edit]

Perched at around 800 m (2,600 ft) above sea level, Aidone is a typical central Sicilian town with narrow streets, stone churches, and scenic views stretching across the countryside. Though modest in size, it has international cultural significance due to its proximity to Morgantina, a once-thriving Greco-Roman city that flourished between the 5th century BCE and the Roman era.

Much of what has been excavated from Morgantina is now displayed in the Museo Archeologico Regionale di Aidone, located in a former Capuchin monastery in town. The museum houses remarkable artefacts including Greek ceramics, coins, and statues—most famously, the Venus of Morgantina, a striking classical statue repatriated from the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Aidone itself also boasts a charming historic centre, traditional festivals, and a tranquil, authentic atmosphere that reflects the rhythms of rural Sicilian life. It's a great base for exploring the archaeological site or for venturing further into Enna province.
