Andritsaina

Andritsaina is a picturesque mountain village in western Peloponnese, perched on the slopes above the Alfeios valley in Elis. Andritsaina is known for its stone-built houses, shaded square, and historic library, which make it a convenient base for exploring some of the region’s lesser-visited but highly rewarding archaeological sites and landscapes.

Andritsaina prospered in the Ottoman and early modern periods, leaving behind elegant mansions and a strong intellectual tradition. The highlight is the renowned Nikolaos Papazoglou Library, one of Greece’s most important provincial collections, reflecting the town’s past as a centre of learning.

Andritsaina is best reached by car. It lies 1.5–2 hours from Kalamata or Pyrgos, via winding but scenic mountain roads.

The Foloi Oak Forest is a rare and extensive oak woodland in the northwest Peloponnese, spreading across a gentle plateau. • 37.456921.9755 Mount Lykaion. A remote mountain on the Arcadia–Elis border, Mount Lykaion was an important sanctuary of Zeus in antiquity. • 37.57479621.7804696 Frankish Monastery of Isova. The atmospheric ruins of the Frankish-era Isova Monastery lie in a quiet valley near the Alfeios River. Founded in the 13th century, the complex includes the remains of a Western Gothic-style abbey church (Notre Dame) and the later church of St Nicholas.
