Understand

[edit | edit source]

Aringay is one of the oldest settlements in La Union, having existed in the precolonial era as a coastal trading post for Cordilleran traders selling their gold at the mouth of the Aringay River. It was conquered by the Spanish in 1572 and became a municipality in 1741 after it was separated from Agoo to the south. The town was rebuilt after World War II, when it was the site of amphibious landings along Lingayen Gulf by Japanese and then American forces in the battle to control Luzon.
