Aschheim is a municipality in the district of Munich (München Land), Upper Bavaria. It is a suburb of the state capital Munich, located east-northeast of the city, and directly on the A99 motorway ring road. The district of Dornach also belongs to the municipality.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Aschheim has approximately 10,000 inhabitants and is located at an altitude of about 512 meters above sea level.
Archaeological finds prove that the area was inhabited as early as the Neolithic period. In the south of the municipal area, excavations also uncovered several Roman farmsteads (villae rusticae) from the 1st century AD, including one with its own underfloor heating and bathroom. In the early Middle Ages, Aschheim was an important center: in 756–757, the first Bavarian provincial synod took place here, and its resolutions also provide the oldest written mention of the place name. Examinations of grave goods from the 6th century also provided one of the earliest direct pieces of evidence of the plague-causing bacterium Yersinia pestis in Europe.
The originally independent district of Dornach was incorporated into Aschheim in 1978 as part of the municipal area reform.
Get in
[edit | edit source]By plane
[edit | edit source]Fly into the Munich Airport. From there, you can drive 24 km south on highway B301, or take the S8 commuter rail to Ismaning and then switch to one of the local buses for the last 7 km. The X202 and 230 routes both stop in Aschheim.
By train
[edit | edit source]Aschheim does not have its own S-Bahn station; instead, the town is served by neighbouring S-Bahn stations and connecting buses. The most practical route from Munich city centre is the S2 (towards Erding or Markt Schwaben) from a central station (e.g., Marienplatz, Hauptbahnhof, Ostbahnhof) to München-Riem or Heimstetten, then change to MVV bus line 263 to Aschheim. MVV bus line 263 connects to the Riem-Dornach S-Bahn station, the Messestadt West U-Bahn station, and, to the east, the Heimstetten S2 station, with a 10-minute frequency Monday to Friday until approximately 21:00.
Or, by U-Bahn, take the U2 to Messestadt West works, where you can also connect to bus line 263 to Aschheim. This is often the more direct subway connection from the city centre (e.g., Marienplatz/Sendlinger Tor) before transferring to the bus. Fare zone: Aschheim is in MVV zone M, i.e., in the core area – a regular inner-city ticket is sufficient. Total travel time: approximately 30–40 minutes from Munich city centre, depending on your starting point and connections. For the exact connection, use the MVV timetable information or the MVGO app – there you can see live whether the S2/Riem or U2/Messestadt West is the faster option. Destination stops in Aschheim are "Aschheim, Mitte" or "Aschheim, Erdinger Straße" – depending on your destination.
By car
[edit | edit source]Aschheim is on the motorway ring road (exit 14, Aschheim/Ismaning, or junction 15, Kirchheim near Munich, depending on the direction of travel). Travel time: the distance from the Kirchheim near Munich junction to the town centre is just over 5 minutes (approx. 3–4 km).
Get around
[edit | edit source]
