Atbara is a city of 115,000 inhabitants in Northern Sudan. Due to its links to the railway industry, Atbara is also known as the Railway City.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Atbara is located at the confluence of the Atbara River and the Nile River. It is an important transport and commercial centre in northeastern Sudan and is historically known for its role in the development of the country's railway network
Atbara lies in a predominantly desert environment, with the Nile and Atbara rivers providing water for agriculture and settlement. The contrast between the green areas along the rivers and the surrounding arid landscape is one of the defining features of the area.
The city is an important regional centre, providing markets, services and transport connections for communities in the surrounding area. Agriculture along the river valleys includes the cultivation of crops such as dates, vegetables and grains.
Arabic is the main language spoken in Atbara. English may be used in some educational, commercial and official contexts.
Climate
[edit | edit source]Atbara has a hot desert climate. Rainfall is very limited and most of the year is dry and sunny. Summer temperatures can become extremely high, while winter days are generally warmer and more comfortable. Nights can be considerably cooler, particularly during the winter months.
History
[edit | edit source]Atbara became particularly important during the development of Sudan's railway system. The city grew around the railway and became one of the country's most significant railway centres. Its strategic location near the Atbara River and the Nile also contributed to its development as a transport and commercial hub. Atbara has played an important role in Sudan's modern history and has been associated with political and labour movements, particularly those connected with railway workers.
Get in
[edit | edit source]By rail
[edit | edit source]Atbara is a major hub for passenger trains in Sudan. However as of 2021, the only reliable link is with the capital Khartoum which is connected by the daily Nile Express train. Passenger trains from Wadi Halfa, connecting with the ferry from Egypt, are supposed to run once-weekly but cancellations are frequent. The same is true for trains from Port Sudan which runs on an irregular schedule.
