Baldock

Baldock is a town with a population of 10,615 (in 2021) in Hertfordshire. The River Ivel rises north of the town from springs.

The A1(M) is an accessible motorway to reach Baldock. Alternatively, you can use the A505, A507 or the B656 if you’re not using the motorway.

From London, use the Great Northern or Thameslink departing from London Kings Cross Station which takes 30-45 minutes.

It can be traversed by car and is not too large to traverse by walking. However, there are bus services operated mostly by Arriva, that often go to Hitchin.

There are pedestrian paths to bike, especially near Avenue Park.

• Ivel Springs, North Road, Baldock SG7 5BX (free car park available adjacent to allotments on North Road.). The wildflower meadow is a scheduled monument. It is very nice when you visit around April or May as there is flowers blooming. Cattle can be found before autumn. 
• Weston Hills, Hatch Lane, Baldock, SG7 6LX (car parking available at Hatch Lane, off London Road). Daily. It is rich in wildlife and cattle temporarily graze there. You can find Roman remains of chalk quarries. You should wear wellies or hiking boots as wet days can be muddy and hills are very steep. (updated Aug 2026)

• Maltings Fish and Chips, 46a High St, Baldock SG7 6BJ (in the town centre), ☏ +44 1462 893393. Cod or Haddock is a must try, make sure to get vinegar or curry sauce, and have mushy peas on the side. £10-20 pp (per person). (updated Aug 2026)
