Bato is a municipality of the island province of Catanduanes.

History
[edit | edit source]With the Spanish Conquestadores led by Juan de Salcedo set foot in Catanduanes in 1575, Bato remained for a time unexplored. However, during the Hispanization of the Philippines, the Governadorcillo ordered that all settlements must have their names registered, together with the data on population and estimated taxes due the King of Spain.
It was on this purpose that local Spanish officials assigned to the place asked a woman who was washing clothes in the natural stone well, the name of the settlement. She thought it that the Spaniards were asking the name of the well. So she answered "Bato" which the Spaniards recorded and reported as the name of one of the sitios of Virac
So then, the place was called Bato until it became a full pledge municipality on April 15, 1799. The appointment of Alcalde Municipal came late in 1898.
The people of the newly created municipality, fought bravely the Spanish guards with Capitan Diego as the head of the insurectos and General Brumbuela as the commanding officer who took charge of Virac, Calolbon, and Bato. The fighting continued until after the Philippine Independence was declared at Kawit, Cavite on June 12. 1898 because of the communication gap.
Climate
[edit | edit source]Bato features a tropical rainforest climate with no distinct dry season. Temperatures remain consistently warm year-round, averaging 25°C to 32°C (77°F–90°F). While rain falls throughout the year, the driest and sunniest window occurs between February and May. Heavy rains peak from October to January due to the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan). Located in the typhoon belt, Bato is frequently exposed to severe weather and tropical cyclones, especially late in the year (August–November).
Orientation
[edit | edit source]Bato is located on the southeastern coast of Catanduanes, 8 to 12 km (5 to 7.5 mi) east of Virac. The town center sits along the Bato River near Cabugao Bay. Because it sits along the main eastern provincial highway, travellers passing through Virac heading toward Baras, Gigmoto, or Viga will pass through Bato.

By boat
[edit | edit source]- Virac Port (Town Center): Peñafrancia Shipping Corporation continues daily RoRo ferry operations between Virac Port and Tabaco Port. Standard economy/non-AC starts at about ₱320. Travel time is about 3.5 hours.
- San Andres Port (17 km from Virac): Regina Shipping Lines (RSL) / MV Calixta operates ferry services between San Andres Port and Tabaco. Regular AC tickets cost around ₱420 per passenger. Travel time is 2.5 to 3 hours depending on sea conditions.
- Onward travel from Tabaco Port:
- To Manila: Direct provincial buses (e.g., DLTB, ALPS, Bicol Isarog) operate daily from Tabaco.
- To Legazpi City: Vans/jeepneys cost ₱50–80.
- To Naga City: Buses/vans cost ₱200–350.
By plane
[edit | edit source]- Virac Airport (VRC): Cebu Pacific operates direct non-stop flights from Manila (NAIA Terminal 3) to Virac. It typically departs Manila around 8AM and arrives at Virac at 9:10AM (approx. 1 hour 10 minutes flight time).

[edit | edit source]- Commuter / Shared Tricycle: Picked up near the Virac Central Market/Port area. Fare is ₱40–50 per person to Bato town proper.
- Special Charter: Ideal if traveling with luggage or heading directly to specific spots (e.g., Bato Church, Maribina Falls). Costs ₱150–300 roundtrip or one-way, depending on waiting time and exact destination.
By public bus
[edit | edit source]- Provincial buses: Any bus leaving Virac towards eastern or northern towns (e.g., Pandan or Viga via the east route) will stop in Bato.
- Heading bound for Bato, Baras, or Gigmoto pass through Bato from the Virac port/market area. Fare is around ₱20–30.
By motorcycle
[edit | edit source]- Self-drive rental: Renting a scooter in Virac costs ₱500–700/day. Bato is a smooth 15– to 20-minute drive along the main highway.
