Bawku

Bawku is a major border town and capital of Bawku Municipal in the Upper East Region of Ghana, on the border with Burkina Faso and near Togo. It is a busy cross-border trading town in the White Volta lowlands of the Ghanaian Northern Plains.

History

Bawku developed as a major market centre linking Kusasi, Mamprusi, Bissa and Mossi traders between Ghana and Burkina Faso. It is known for smock weaving and livestock trade.

People

Kusasi, Mamprusi, Bissa and Mossi. Kusaal, Mampruli and Hausa are widely spoken. Muslim majority with Christian minority. Very traditional.

  • From Tamale 4-5 hr via Bolga.
  • From Burkina Faso via Pusiga border 15 min north. Get Togo/Burkina visa in advance in Accra.
  • The nearest airport is Tamale TML  IATA.
