Beijing/Mentougou

Mentougou District (门头沟区; Méntóugōuqū) is a rural district in western Beijing Municipality. The district has mountainous terrain and Mount Ling the tallest peak in Beijing is situated in the district. The historic village of Cuandixia is Mentougou's most notable destination. A number of other heritage villages have also sprung up catering to tourists.

History

[edit | edit source]

Mentougou has a long history shaped by its location in the mountains west of Beijing. Archaeological evidence from Donghulin Village in present-day Zhaitang Town shows human activity in the area about 10,000 years ago. Over later centuries, the district developed important religious sites. Tanzhe Temple dates back more than 1,700 years and is regarded as the oldest Buddhist temple in Beijing, while Jietai Temple was first built in 622 during the Tang dynasty.

The mountains also influenced the area's economic and cultural development. The ancient roads of western Beijing connected villages in Mentougou with the capital and supported trade from the Liao through the Qing dynasties. Traditional mountain villages developed along these routes; Cuandixia, for example, still preserves courtyard houses dating mainly from the Ming and Qing periods. Coal mining later became another important part of Mentougou's history, with documented mining activity dating to at least the Ming dynasty. In modern times, railways and mining further shaped the district's industrial development.

Public transport service from central Beijing to Mentougou is mainly based on buses, many of them starting from Pingguoyuan (western final stop of subway line 1, temporarily closed for renovation in 2020) and stopping at Jin'anqiao (western terminus of subway line 6). Buses 336 and 931 run from Pingguoyuan (苹果园 píngguǒyuán) to Hetan (河滩 hétān) in Mentougou District. From there bus lines to most places of interest in the area can be taken.

For trips from Beijing city, renting a taxi for a day might be easier and less time intensive.
