Bendery (Russian: Бендеры; Romanian: Bender or Tighina) is the largest city in the unrecognized republic of Transnistria on the right (western) bank of the Dniester River; it's an important cultural and historical center of this country.
Get in
[edit | edit source]
Frequent buses and marshrutkas stop here en route from Chișinău, Căușeni and Tiraspol. Trolley bus 19 from Tiraspol costs 1.6 руб, tickets are sold by the conductor. Trains used to run from Bender 2 station to Chișinău, Odesa and even Moscow before the war in Ukraine started.
Get around
[edit | edit source]
You can explore the city center easily on foot. A historic fortress, war memorials, and museums are all located nearby. However, as the city stretches for many kilometers along the Dniester River from north to south, you will need to use transport to get a thorough look at everything it has to offer.

See
[edit | edit source]The town is pleasant to walk through. You'll notice a fortified Russian checkpoint on the bridge leading across the Dniestr, these are the local peacekeeping forces. In the very heart of the city lies a memorial to the victims of the aggression by Moldova, which attacked this city in 1992, situated directly on the sites where the fighting took place. The bus terminal is a nice example of Soviet bus terminal design.
- 1 Bendery Fortress. A 16th-century Ottoman fortification overlooking the river, restored and open to the public. There is a terrifying collection of torture devices from the period. Outside is the newer Alexander Nevsky Church which is well worth a visit.
- 2 Memorial to the Defenders of Pridnestrovie (Memorial of Memory and Sorrow). A main memorial complex in Bendery. The memorial was built in memory of those who defended the freedom and fell victim to the aggression by Moldova against Pridnestrovie in 1992.
- 3 Memorial of Military Glory. Dedicated to the Soviet soldiers who fell while liberating Bendery from Romanian and German fascists during the Great Patriotic War; featuring the 14-meter-tall obelisk shaped like a Russian rifle bayonet and the Eternal Flame.
- 4 Black Fence. A memorial complex commemorating 500 railway workers and local residents who were killed on this site in February 1918 by Romanian occupiers, who had seized the territory of Russian Bessarabia (mainly the territory of present-day Moldova).
In the nearby village of Varnitsa there is a monument in memory of the skirmishes (famous in Swedish history as kalabaliken) during which Charles XII, king of Sweden, was taken prisoner by Turkish forces (1713), after having been in the city as a refugee following the battle of Poltava. See Swedish Empire for context.
It was also here that the Cossack hetman Mazepa, who betrayed the Russian tsar Peter the Great and is known from Alexander Pushkin's poem "Poltava", passed away. Pushkin himself visited these parts while researching the history of those events.
Do
[edit | edit source]- The main train station is worth seeing. It has some interesting architecture and the tracks can be explored, as the line has been closed since the conflict in Crimea.
- To the left of the station (looking towards the front of it) is an old Soviet train which houses a free museum (closed on Sundays).
- Visit Gorky’s Cinema for its grand Soviet-era building, particularly the main lobby. Opposite in Scuarul Comsomolului Leninist Park is a statue of Lenin.

[edit | edit source]There's a nice Uzbek restaurant nearby the bus terminal. The owner also speaks some English. If you are looking for a western style food place then you can visit Andy's Pizza which is in the middle of Bendery one block away from Supermarket Sheriff.
Upstairs inside the Soviet-era bus station, CCCP is a Soviet-style canteen serving surprisingly tasty food for €2-5.
Drink
[edit | edit source]The local wine represents good value. The quality is higher than the price suggests, it's well worth trying.
Sleep
[edit | edit source]Connect
[edit | edit source]The Transnistria-wide telecommunications operator "Interdnestrcom" operates in the city. Free Wi-Fi is available at dining establishments, as well as on public transport (in newer trolleybuses and some minibuses). Additionally, "Interdnestrcom" provides 30 minutes of free daily Wi-Fi access in public spaces, such as the city market, the library, and the communications center.
There is also a strong signal from Moldovan mobile operators, particularly in the Varnitsa area.
