Understand

[edit | edit source]

Originally developed in the late 19th century as a pair of master-planned rail commuter suburbs known historically as Berwyn and Darling's Grove, the territory officially incorporated as a city in 1908. During the 1920s and 1930s, Berwyn experienced an intensive building boom, drawing massive waves of skilled Czech, Bohemian, and Italian immigrant working-class families moving westward out of dense Chicago neighborhoods.

The city's urban layout is highly unique:

  • The Brick Bungalow Belt: Due to strict historic fire codes and standard architectural planning of the 1920s, a vast portion of the city's residential streets is lined with thousands of beautifully preserved, ornate Chicago-style brick bungalows. This unique architectural footprint has earned the city a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • The Route 66 Connection: The city's primary southern commercial thoroughfare tracks along Ogden Avenue, which represents a historic, legendary segment of the original U.S.. Route 66. This heritage is celebrated proudly across the local business rows.
