Bonny

Bonny is a historic island town in Rivers State, Nigeria. It is located in the Niger Delta, on Bonny Island near the Atlantic coast. The town is known for its history, traditional culture, waterways and importance to Nigeria's oil and gas industry.

Bonny is the traditional capital of the Bonny Kingdom, one of the historic kingdoms of the eastern Niger Delta. The town is situated on Bonny Island and is surrounded by rivers, creeks, mangrove forests and coastal wetlands. Water transport is therefore an important part of life in the area. Bonny has a mixture of traditional Niger Delta culture and modern industrial development. The island is also associated with major oil and gas facilities and has become an important centre for the energy industry. Bonny Local Government Area had a population of 214,983 according to the 2006 census. The town and surrounding communities are predominantly associated with the Ibani people. Ibani is the main indigenous language spoken in Bonny. English is used for official communication, while Nigerian Pidgin is also widely used in everyday communication.

Bonny has a long history as a trading centre in the Niger Delta. The Bonny Kingdom became particularly important during the nineteenth century through its involvement in regional and overseas trade. The kingdom later became an important centre of the palm-oil trade. Its rulers and merchants maintained trading relationships with European merchants operating along the West African coast. The historic importance of the Bonny Kingdom can still be seen in the town's traditional institutions, cultural festivals and historic buildings.

Bonny has a hot and humid tropical climate with substantial rainfall throughout much of the year. The rainy season can bring heavy rainfall and flooding, while the drier period generally provides more favourable conditions for travelling and outdoor activities.

Boat transport is one of the main ways of reaching Bonny Island. Passenger boats and water taxis connect Bonny with Port Harcourt and other communities in the Niger Delta. Travel times depend on the departure point, boat type and weather conditions.

Bonny Island has road connections within the island, but travellers arriving from mainland Rivers State generally need to use water transport unless travelling via specialised industrial access routes.

Bonny town can be explored on foot, while taxis and motorcycles may be available for local journeys. Boats are useful for travelling between Bonny and nearby riverine communities. Visitors travelling for business or industrial purposes may need to use authorised transport arranged by their host organisation.
