Bouira

Bouira (Arabic: البويرة) is a city in Central Algeria. With a population of nearly 80,000 people, it is the largest city and the capital city of Bouïra province.

Bouira lies southeast of Algiers, near the foothills of the Djurdjura Mountains, and serves as an important regional centre for the surrounding Kabylie area. The city is surrounded by agricultural land and mountain landscapes and is an important commercial and administrative centre for the province.

The city is well connected by road to other parts of northern Algeria, making it a useful base for exploring the surrounding countryside and mountain areas.

The area around Bouira has been inhabited for centuries and has been influenced by the different civilizations that controlled northern Algeria. Its location between the coastal plains and the interior mountains made it an important route between different parts of the region.

During the French colonial period, the settlement developed as part of the wider network of towns and transportation routes in northern Algeria. After Algerian independence in 1962, Bouira became the administrative centre of Bouira Province.

Bouira has a Mediterranean-influenced climate. Summers are generally hot and dry, while winters are cooler and wetter. Temperatures can be considerably cooler in the surrounding mountain areas, particularly during winter.

Algiers and Bouira are 107km apart and both cities are connected to each other by the East–West Highway, also known as Highway A1. The journey should take you 80 minutes.

There are no airports in the city. The closest airport is Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers.

Bouida is one of the stops along the Algiers-Skikda line.
