Butwal is in Western Tarai.

Butwal is a rapidly growing city in the Western Tarai plain and is considered the commercial hub and gateway to western Nepal. Aside from a developing presence of hotels and restaurants, the city has some unique attractions that include religious and historical military and political sites. Plus it is at the center of a number of nearby attractions like the birthplace of Gautama Buddha (Lumbini) and Ramgram Stupa for which Lumbini Province is known.

Butwal is at the crossroads of the Mahendra Highway (East-West Highway) and the Siddhartha Highway, such that motor transit from Kathmandu or India is possible. It also is only 22km from Siddharthanagar where Nepal's second international airport, Gautam Buddha International Airport, is located.

• Shree Siddhababa Temple - a popular Hindu temple where it is believed you should release a pigeon if a wish has been granted, hence a large population of pigeons.
• Manimukunda Sen Park - also known as Phulbari, are the ruins of the palace of king Manimukunda Sen of the medieval Palpa Kingdom.
• Jitgadi - fortress and site of where Colonel Ujir Singh Thapa prevailed against the East India Company during the Anglo Nepal War of 1814-1816.
