Changhua (彰化) is a city in Changhua County. The city is the seat of government for the county.
Understand
[edit | edit source]The county of Changhua is home to the Babuza Aboriginal people. Historically, Changhua city was a base for immigrants from China and used as a staging post in various campaigns against the indigenous inhabitants. To support this, a fortress was built out of bamboo which gained the city the nickname "Bamboo Town".
The city has an area of approximately 65 km2 (25 sq mi)km and a population of around 226,744 (as of January 2023).

By train

1 Changhua Station, No. 1, Sanmin Road. The city is connected to the TRA rail network and is accessible via Changhua Station. The station lies roughly in the centre of the built-up western half of the city area.

Changhua is connected to Taiwan's High Speed Rail network via 2 Changhua HSR station (高鐵彰化站). . The station is in Tianzhong, a district in South Chunghua.
If you are going to North Chunghua, transferring from 3 Taichung HSR station (高鐵台中站). would be a better choice. You can choose TRA trains or shuttle buses at the station - both are faster than transferring from Changhua HSR station.

Architecture
[edit | edit source]- 2 Changhua Great Buddha Statue of Bagua Mountain (八卦山大佛), No.8-1, Bagua Rd (彰化市八卦路8-1號), ☏ +886 4-722-2290. 09:30-17:30. The main attractions in the scenic area include the Baguashan Great Buddha, the Anti-Japanese Martyrs Monument Park and the Healthy Trail etc. It is one of the “Eight Views of Changhua”. The statue of the Buddha was completed in 1961. The original site was the Palace of the Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa Prince, and it was 23 meters high. It is known as the largest Buddha in East Asia. Surrounded by flowers and plants, it is suitable for passengers to rest, followed by the Great Buddha Hall, and there is a Dragon Pond in front, and can overlooking the street scene of Changhua City.

- 4 Lukang Ai Gate (鹿港隘門). The gate was built in 1839 so that the town could be closed off at night and prevent those from neighbouring areas from entering and causing trouble.

- 18 Confucian Temple of Changhua (彰化孔子廟), No. 30, Kongmen Road, ☏ +886 4 723 6746. Tue-Sun 08:30-17:00. The complex was constructed in 1726 with a temple and a school, although only the central structure remains.
- 19 Kaihua Temple (彰化開化寺), No. 134, Zhonghua Road, ☏ +886 4 726 8741. It was built in 1724 as a temple to Guanyin. It has served many uses over the centuries and has been damaged and rebuilt several times during its history.
- Yuanching Temple. Constructed in 1763, it is perhaps the first temple in Taiwan to venerate the Jade Emperor.
- 20 Nanyao Temple (南瑤宮). Built in 1738 as a temple to Mazu, the structure has been added to since then.
