Chongoni

Chongoni is a densely forested highland reserve located in the Dedza District of Central Malawi, Malawi. Encompassing over 126 km² of rugged granite hills and valleys, it is internationally renowned for hosting the Chongoni Rock-Art Area, a UNESCO World Heritage site containing the richest and most concentrated collection of prehistoric and historic rock paintings in Central Africa.

The granite formations of Chongoni shelter 127 distinct archeological sites. The rock art is divided into two distinct historical eras: red schematic paintings created up to 10,000 years ago by the ancestral BaTwa pygmy hunter-gatherers, and white figurative paintings created by the Chewa agriculturalists from the late Iron Age into the 20th century. The sites retain deep spiritual relevance, with local Chewa communities still using the caves for traditional initiation ceremonies, rainmaking rituals, and ancestral heritage celebrations.

Chongoni is accessible from the national capital, Lilongwe (approximately 60 km northwest), or the town of -14.38333334.3333331 Dedza (about 20 km south).

• From Lilongwe, drive south along the main paved M1 highway toward Blantyre. Look for the marked dirt turn-off leading east into the forest reserve near the Linthipe axis.
• A high-clearance vehicle or a 4x4 is highly recommended for navigating the rough, unpaved logging roads branching inward toward the main rock art caves.

Regular minibuses and shared taxis run along the M1 highway between Lilongwe and Dedza. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Linthipe turn-off or the main gate junction for the Chongoni Forest Training College, where you can arrange a local motorcycle taxi to travel the remaining distance to the base trails.

Because the 127 rock art panels are scattered widely across rugged granite terrain, walking on foot is necessary along the designated trail systems. For navigating between the major distributed cave groups (such as Mphunzi or Chencherere), renting a mountain bike or hiring a local 4x4 vehicle provides the necessary speed and flexibility.

• -14.23834.2421 Chencherere Rock Art Panels, Northern Cave Cluster (follow the signposted northern trail path ascending from the main forest station). Daylight hours. A heavily protected shelter showcasing complex white clay paintings depicting ritualistic symbols, animal figures, and traditional masks linked to the Nyau secret society of the Chewa people. Reserve entry fee applies; local guide required.  
• -14.25934.2152 Mphunzi Hill Sites, Western Escarpment (accessible via a secondary dirt track tracking west from the highway junction). Daylight hours. One of the most extensive clusters in the reserve, hosting eight distinct rock shelters on a single granite hill. It features a fascinating mix of both ancient BaTwa hunter-gatherer paintings and newer Chewa historical artwork. Included in general entry fee.  

• Guided archeological trekking: Hire an official community guide at the forestry office. Trying to find the concealed rock alcoves without a local tracker is extremely difficult due to the dense mountain brush.
• Birdwatching and hiking: The granite kopjes are surrounded by native miombo woodlands, hosting dozens of unique raptors and alpine bird species.

There are no commercial restaurants, kiosks, or grocery shops within the protected forest boundaries.

• Travelers must pack all of their own drinking water, snacks, and trail rations from supermarkets in **Lilongwe** or local markets in Dedza.

• Chongoni Forest Lodge & Rest Houses: Basic, rustic self-catering chalets and rest houses are operated near the Forestry Training College for travelers staying overnight.
• Wilderness camping: Permitted at specific designated plateaus near the base stations, provided you have a local guide and clear permission from the forest rangers.

• Dedza – A high-altitude town famous for its scenic mountain hikes and the historic Dedza Pottery workshop.
• Lilongwe – The sprawling capital city, offering full amenities, museums, craft markets, and major flight networks.
