Yuzhong District (渝中 Yúzhōng) , a district under the jurisdiction of Chongqing Municipality, is located in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and is one of the nine districts in the main city of Chongqing. Located at the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River, it is also known as the Yuzhong Peninsula because it is shaped like a peninsula and is surrounded by the two rivers. It covers an area of 23.24 square kilometers. As of September 2024, Yuzhong District has 11 sub-districts under its jurisdiction. As of the end of 2023, the permanent population of Yuzhong District was 576,000.
Yuzhong is located on a peninsula surrounded by the Yangtze and Jialing rivers. Because of its mountainous geography, streets and attractions are often built at different elevations. Walking between nearby places may involve stairs, steep streets, or escalators.
The district is one of the main commercial and tourist centers of Chongqing. The Jiefangbei area is filled with shopping malls, restaurants, hotels and entertainment venues. The riverside areas around Hongyadong and Chaotianmen are especially popular at night.
Chongqing served as the temporary capital of China during the Second Sino-Japanese War, and several museums and historic sites in Yuzhong are connected with this period.
Yuzhong is a compact but hilly district, so places that look close on a map may take longer to reach on foot. The Jiefangbei area is the main commercial centre, with shopping malls, restaurants and access to nearby Hongyadong. Chaotianmen, at the meeting point of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, offers river views and access to the Raffles City complex. Around the older streets and hillsides, visitors can experience a more traditional side of Chongqing’s urban landscape.
Yuzhong District has a humid subtropical monsoon climate, with hot and humid summers, mild winters, and abundant rainfall mainly from spring to early autumn. Foggy and cloudy days are also common in Chongqing.
Yuzhong has long been an important urban centre in Chongqing because of its strategic position between the Yangtze and Jialing rivers. Its riverfront supported transport and trade, helping the area develop into a commercial and administrative hub.
During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Chongqing served as the provisional capital of China, and the city experienced extensive bombing. Yuzhong’s historical streets and landmarks reflect different stages of Chongqing’s development, from its older riverfront settlements to its modern commercial centre.
The journey from the airport takes about 30 to 50 minutes, depending on traffic conditions, and costs about 60 to 100 RMB. Taxis are ideal for travelers with a lot of luggage or who are unfamiliar with the route, but they may encounter traffic jams during peak hours and are more expensive.
The airport bus is an economical choice, the journey takes about 40 to 60 minutes, and the ticket price is 20 yuan. The bus is convenient for passengers who are not in a hurry. Although the fare is low, the frequency is relatively fixed, and there is a bus every half an hour to Jiefangbei in Yuzhong District.
The airport has Rail Transit Line 3, which takes about 30 minutes to reach Lianglukou or Niujiaotuo Station in Yuzhong District, and costs only 5 to 6 yuan. Light rail avoids road congestion and is cheap, but it may be crowded during peak hours and is not suitable for passengers carrying a lot of luggage. These three methods have their own advantages, and passengers can choose the most suitable means of transportation according to time, budget and needs.
Metro:Chongqing Rail Transit is one of the easiest ways to travel around Yuzhong. Important stations include Jiefangbei, Xiaoshizi, Linjiangmen, Jiaochangkou, Lianglukou, Zengjiayan and Liziba.Metro Line 1 and Line 2 are particularly useful for visitors.
Bus:Local buses serve most parts of Yuzhong. Because Chongqing has a complicated mountainous road system, mobile map applications can be useful for finding current routes.
Foot:Walking is a good way to explore Yuzhong. Visitors should expect steep streets, stairs, bridges and changes in elevation.
Taxi:Taxis and ride-hailing services are widely available. Traffic can be heavy around Jiefangbei and other tourist areas, especially during the evening.

The People's Square was only completed in 1997 and is decorated with trees and flowers. The ground of the square is paved with smooth marble tiles; there is magic music fountain; at the southern end of the square stands a stage for performances in the open air.
