Copperbelt

The Copperbelt Province is situated in Northern Zambia, a region which is very rich in minerals. It was the backbone of the Northern Rhodesian economy during British colonial rule, but its economic importance was severely damaged by a crash in global copper prices in 1973 and the nationalization of the copper mines by the government of Kenneth Kaunda.

Copperbelt is a region in northern Zambia known for its rich copper deposits, mining towns and industrial heritage. It lies along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is one of Zambia's most important economic regions. The Copperbelt is centred on a group of major towns including Kitwe, Ndola, Chingola, Mufulira and Luanshya. These towns developed largely because of the region's copper-mining industry.

Copper mining remains central to the regional economy, although the Copperbelt also has manufacturing, construction, trade, agriculture and service industries.

The region has a mixture of urban centres, mine sites, woodland and rural settlements. The landscape is generally characterised by a tropical savanna environment with woodland and seasonal streams.

Lamba is spoken in towns and districts such as Kapiri Mposhi, Mkushi, Lufwanyama, and Ndola.

Taxis, minibuses and private vehicles are common forms of transport. Public transport connects the major towns, while private vehicles are more convenient for travelling between towns and rural areas.
