Daruvar

Janković Castle

Daruvar is a spa town in western Slavonia, Croatia, known for its thermal springs, landscaped parks and Czech heritage. Its compact centre, historic spa buildings and nearby vineyards make it suitable for a day trip or a longer stay combining swimming, walking and wine tasting.

Understand

[edit | edit source]

Thermal springs have shaped Daruvar since Roman times, when the settlement was known as Aquae Balissae. The modern town developed around the estate of Count Antun Janković and the spa during the 18th century. Its name comes from Hungarian words meaning "crane's castle", referring to the bird on the Janković family coat of arms.

Daruvar is an important cultural centre of Croatia's Czech minority. Czech heritage is reflected in local associations, food and festivals. The town also has a brewing tradition dating to 1840 and is home to the Staročeško beer brand.

Daruvar lies on the railway route between Banova Jaruga and Virovitica. From Zagreb, a journey can involve a train to Banova Jaruga followed by an onward connection.

As of October 2026, replacement buses operate instead of trains on the Banova Jaruga–Daruvar–Virovitica route because of engineering works, with the closure announced until 12 December 2026. In Daruvar, these buses stop in front of the railway station building. Check HŽ Passenger Transport for current timetables and replacement-bus arrangements.
