Dewas

Dewas is a town in the Malwa region of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh in India. Dewas is 35 km from Indore on National Highway 3.

Dewas used to be the seat of two 15-Gun Salute state princely states during the British Raj, Dewas Junior state and Dewas Senior state, ruled by the Pawar clan of the Marathas. The city is the administrative capital of Dewas district. Dewas is an industrialised city and houses a government bank note press.

In 2011, Dewas had a population of about 290,000.

History

Dewas was established as a sovereign Maratha territory in the first half of the 18th century. Its foundations were laid by the brothers Tukoji Rao (Senior) and Jivaji Rao (Junior) of the Pawar clan. The Pawar dynasty of Dewas emerged as a prominent military power during the expansion of the Maratha Empire. It became the capital of two princely states during the British era.

Dewas has direct trains from all the major cities of India. Premium trains that services Dewas include the daily Awanitka Express from Mumbai and the thrice-weekly Pune-Indore Express from Pune. There are two daily trains from New Delhi, the Hazarat Nizamuddin Intercity Express and the Malwa Express.

  • Devi ki Tekri. The Tekri can be climbed by two ways one through steps and another through slope. We took the slope way which was more lengthy but easier to climb.
    In the south of the tekri is the temple of Tulja (Elder) Mata. According to historians it is contemporary to the temple of Chamunda Mata. In the temple is the half statue (upper portion) of the Goddess Tulja. Goddess Tulja and Chamunda are both sisters.
