Understand
[edit | edit source]Eastern Kenya is a broad geographical area of Kenya extending from the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya and the central highlands towards the country's arid northern and southeastern regions. It includes a mixture of fertile agricultural highlands, dry savanna, semi-arid plains and parts of the Indian Ocean hinterland. For Wikivoyage purposes, the area can be understood through destinations such as Meru, Embu, Isiolo, Marsabit, Machakos and the surrounding counties.
Eastern Kenya has considerable geographical and climatic variation. The areas around Mount Kenya, including Meru and Embu, receive substantially more rainfall and support intensive agriculture. Farther east and north, the landscape becomes progressively drier, with extensive areas of grassland, bushland and semi-desert.
The region is home to several distinct communities, including the Meru, Embu, Kamba, Borana, Somali, Samburu and other peoples. Their languages, agricultural practices, pastoral traditions and trading networks contribute to the cultural diversity of the area. Agriculture is especially important in the wetter parts of eastern Kenya. Tea, coffee, miraa, fruits, vegetables, maize and dairy products are among the important agricultural products. In the drier north and east, livestock keeping is a major livelihood.
History
[edit | edit source]Eastern Kenya has been inhabited for centuries by farming and pastoral communities whose movements and settlements were influenced by rainfall, water availability and access to grazing land. During the colonial period, roads, administrative centres and commercial networks expanded across the region. Towns such as Meru, Embu, Machakos and Isiolo developed as administrative and trading centres. After independence in 1963, the region continued to develop through improvements in agriculture, roads, education, healthcare and public administration. The establishment of Kenya's county system further strengthened towns such as Embu, Meru, Isiolo and Machakos as regional administrative centres.
Landscape
[edit | edit source]The western and central parts of the region include fertile slopes and foothills associated with Mount Kenya. These areas contain extensive farmland and relatively dense settlement. Moving towards Isiolo and Marsabit, the environment becomes more arid. Northern parts contain extensive dry bushland and savanna, while isolated mountains such as Mount Marsabit create greener environments around their slopes. The southeastern part of the region includes the semi-arid landscapes around Machakos and neighbouring areas.
Climate
[edit | edit source]Climate varies substantially across Eastern Kenya. The Mount Kenya foothills generally have cooler and wetter conditions, with rainfall supporting tea, coffee, horticulture and dairy farming. Lower and more eastern areas are warmer and considerably drier. Northern areas around Isiolo and Marsabit experience semi-arid to arid conditions, with high temperatures, irregular rainfall and prolonged dry periods. Rainfall can vary greatly from year to year, making drought an important environmental and economic concern.
