Understand
[edit | edit source]

A distinctive feature of Eguisheim is that the town is shaped roughly as a circle with 3 circular streets, one outside the town centre and 2 within. On the circular Rue du Rempart, the houses are built into the old town ramparts. The circular residential streets within the ramparts are very quaint and photogenic. There are many decorative floral displays throughout town.
Eguisheim is the supposed birthplace of Bruno d'Eguisheim-Dagsbourg (1002-1054), a former bishop of Toul, who became Pope Léon IX. You can see his statue in Place du Château in the centre of town.
