Enugu State

Enugu State is a state in South East Nigeria. The state has a population of over 4.4 million as of 2016.

Enugu state got its name from its capital city, Enugu. The word "Enugu" (from Enu Ugwu) means "the top of the hill".

Enugu is also known as the coal city state, this alias is as a result of the discovery of coal in the Udi ridge by Albert Kitson during his search for silver.

It is primarily inhabited by the Igbo of southeastern Nigeria and a few Idoma/Igala people in Ette (Igbo-Eze North).

Enugu is the host of Nigeria's first indigenous university, (University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)). It is also a host of other institutions like the Enugu State University of Science & Technology (ESUT), Enugu State College of Education Technical, Federal Government College Enugu, Federal School of Dental Technology & Therapy and College of Immaculate Conception.

Enugu has two Seasons. The hot season and the warm season. The warm season is usually very cloudy.

• Akanu Ibiam International Airport at Enugu is located on Airport Road, Emene, on the eastern outskirts of the capital city. It handles domestic daily passenger flights from major Nigerian hubs like Lagos and Abuja via carriers like Air Peace, as well as limited international connections. Registered airport taxis are available outside the terminal doors.

Enugu is the primary transport bottleneck connecting Southern Nigeria to the Middle Belt and North.

• From the West: Mass transit buses run from Onitsha and Asaba down the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway, passing through the 9th Mile Corner transit hub before entering the city.
• From the North: Trans-regional buses arrive from Abuja or Makurdi via the Nsukka corridor.
• From the South: Shared cabs and coastal commercial lines climb north from Port Harcourt and Aba along the Port Harcourt–Enugu Expressway.

• Keke Napep (Tricycles): The definitive choice for moving within city residential sectors (such as Independence Layout, Achara Layout, and Ogui). They are color-coded in yellow.
• Intracity Shuttles (Minibuses): Cheap and constant, these loop between major terminals like Holy Ghost (Ogbete), Gariki, and Abakpa.
• E-Hailing Apps: Services like Bolt Nigeria operate reliably within Enugu city limits and are highly recommended for nighttime travel or visiting residential layouts.
• Okada (Motorcycles): Strictly banned within the main Enugu capital metropolitan grids, but they remain highly essential for navigating rural local government areas and the hilly campus town of Nsukka.

• Awhum Waterfall in Awhum, near Abor, is a natural waterfall and pilgrimage site.
