Siniloan (pronounced as "see-nee-low-ahn") is a town in the province of Laguna in the Philippines. It is the commercial and transport hub of northeastern Laguna. For practical reasons, this guide includes the adjacent town of Famy, which forms a small urban conurbation with downtown Siniloan.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Siniloan as a settlement had existed long before the Spanish conquest. It was formerly known as Guiling-guiling and was established as a town by the Spanish in 1583. It received its current name in 1604. In 1910, the barrio of Calumpang was separated from Siniloan to form the town of Famy, derived from the maiden surname of the mother of the first Philippine president, Emilio Aguinaldo. From being a forgotten backwater and a stronghold of New People's Army rebels for much of its modern history, Siniloan has become the commercial center of eastern Laguna, serving as the market town for its neighboring municipalities.
Orientation
[edit | edit source]Siniloan and Famy are wedged in a valley between the Sierra Madre Mountains on three sides and Laguna de Bay to the south. The creek-like Siniloan River passes through both towns. Transportation-wise, Siniloan is bounded to the north by the Manila East Road and to the south by Pakil-Pangil-Mabitac Road.
Get in
[edit | edit source]Both Siniloan and Famy lie along the Manila East Road (Route 602) heading to Pagsanjan. Motorists from Manila enter the towns from a winding and mountainous section of the road from Pililla in Rizal. The highway itself passes skirts the southern edge of downtown Famy and the adjacent northern edge of northern Siniloan. This area is also the terminus of a road leading to the towns of Real and Infanta in Quezon Province, and is used by heavy vehicles from Metro Manila that are barred from using the Marilaque Highway further north.
By public transportation
[edit | edit source]Siniloan is the main transport hub of northeastern Laguna. It is the hub for jeepney routes radiating towards the provincial capital Santa Cruz, the coastal town of Infanta in Quezon, and neighboring towns in Rizal such as Pililla, Tanay, and Jalajala. Their common terminal is in the public market, from where tricycles can also be taken to Famy. SINCRODA operates a daily service to Siniloan from the Robinsons Mall (Big R) in Cainta, a suburb of Metro Manila, passing through Antipolo and other major towns in eastern Rizal. The jeepney from Santa Cruz runs along Pakil-Pangil-Mabitac Road.

Get around
[edit | edit source]
Tricycles are the primary means of transportation in both Siniloan and Famy.
Roads in Siniloan's downtown are narrow and can get congested, especially when Manila East Road is closed due to flooding from Siniloan River.
Both Siniloan and Famy's town centers are compact and accessible on foot.

- 3 Buruwisan Falls, Laguio. A 30 metres (98 ft) high cascade in the Mount Romelo massif.
- 4 Church of the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Creating Cross of the Lord, Valderama Street, Bagong Pag-asa. Siniloan is probably one of the least likely places to find adherents of the Russian Orthodox Church, yet this chapel-sized building is the first such place of worship that was built in the country. Established in 1980, it initially catered to a small community of Russian refugees from Soviet rule but has since attracted a small following of local Filipinos. Apart from the Orthodox cross on the steeple and an onion dome by the door, the church is architecturally nondescript and set inside a quiet residential area.
