Gajoldoba (গজলডোবা Gojolḍōbā), a small village on the Teesta River in North Bengal, is a paradise for birdwatchers and a secondary tourist hub of North Bengal.

[edit | edit source]As per legend, Krishna, along with his principal consort Rukmini, chose the Baikunthapur Forest near Gajoldoba as their hiding place. A dam was constructed over the Teesta River in Gajoldoba to control the river's high currents. It created a huge reservoir that attracts different species of migratory birds in winter. Kangchenjunga is visible from Gajoldoba, like many parts of North Bengal.
West Bengal Tourism has been pushing to develop Gajoldoba into a "mega-tourist hub" of North Bengal for nearly a decade. It also runs an exclusive lodge at Gajoldoba, called Bhorer Alo (ভোরের আলো Bhōrer Ālō), meaning the "light of dawn".

[edit | edit source]- 1 Gajoldoba Barrage. A barrage built in 1985 by Jessop for irrigation purposes. But its reservoir has since become both a popular tourist attraction and a bird-watching centre.

- 3 Pakhibitan Bird Sanctuary (পাখিবিতান Pākhibitān). Watch various species of migratory birds amidst lush greenery and calm waters.
