Gokseong

Gokseong (곡성, 谷城) is a county in Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City, South Korea. Located around the Seomjingang River, it is known for its railway heritage, riverside scenery, mountains, temples, and rural landscapes. The county is especially known for Seomjingang Train Village, where visitors can ride a steam locomotive along the old railway line.

Gokseong is a rural county surrounded by mountains and rivers. The Seomjingang River flows through the area for about 36 km and provides scenic areas for walking, cycling, and outdoor recreation.

One of Gokseong's best-known attractions is Seomjingang Train Village, developed around the old Gokseong railway station. A replica steam locomotive runs approximately 10 km between the old Gokseong Station and Gajeong Station, offering views of the countryside along the Seomjingang River.

Gokseong is also known for its traditional temples and mountain scenery. Dorimsa Temple is located near Gokseong-eup, while Taeansa Temple is located at the foot of Dongnisan Mountain.

The area can be visited as a day trip, but visitors who want to explore the surrounding rivers, mountains and villages may prefer to stay overnight.

Gokseong Station is on the Jeolla Line and is served by KTX and regional trains. The line connects Gokseong with cities including Iksan, Jeonju, Namwon, Gurye, Suncheon and Yeosu.

From Yongsan Station in Seoul, travelers can take a train toward Yeosu and get off at Gokseong Station. Travel times and train types vary, so check the current Korail timetable before traveling.

Intercity buses connect Gokseong with nearby cities and counties. Gwangju is one of the main regional transport hubs for reaching Gokseong.

Gokseong can be reached by road from Gwangju, Namwon and other cities in southwestern Korea. A car is useful for visiting attractions outside the town center.

The main town around Gokseong Station is relatively small, but many tourist attractions are spread throughout the county.

Local buses and taxis can be used to reach attractions outside the town center. A car can be more convenient for visiting places such as Taeansa Temple and rural villages.

Gokseong also operates a tourist taxi service, in which local drivers provide guided tours around the county.
