Gonzaga is a coastal municipality in Cagayan on Luzon, the Philippines. It is home to the only active volcano in northern Luzon and extensive beaches.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Formerly known as Vangag, Gonzaga is located in a peninsula at the northeasternmost point of Luzon. Most settlements are sandwiched between the mountain and the coast, with the town center being on the shores of the Babuyan Channel. The town's Pacific coast is sparsely populated in part due to the rough seas and rugged terrain, and is only accessible by boat from the neighboring town of Santa Ana.

Gonzaga is at the northeastern tip of Luzon Island. It is along Dugo-San Vicente Road that originates in Camalaniugan, 72 kilometres (45 mi) away, although most travelers enter through Magapit Junction in Lal-lo and follow Magapit-Mision Road, a shortcut that merges with Dugo-San Vicente Road at the boundary of Santa Teresita and Gonzaga towns on its way to Santa Ana.
GV Florida operates once a day bus trips to Gonzaga from Manila. There are also passenger vans to Gonzaga originating from Tuguegarao, as well as jeepneys and minibuses from Aparri.

[edit | edit source]- 1 Mount Cagua, Magrafil. The only active volcano in northern Luzon, it is a 1,133 metres (3,717 ft) peak in the Sierra Madre mountains that last erupted in 1907 and has a 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) wide caldera. It is home to hot springs, fumaroles and some endemic plant and animal species such as the cloud rat.
- 2 Rumang-ay War Memorial, Coastal Road, Batangan. A small obelisk along the beach commemorating the spot where Japanese forces conducted the first amphibious landings on Luzon during their invasion of the country on December 10, 1941 at the start of the Pacific theater of World War II.
- 3 Matara Reefs and White Sand Beach, San Jose. A partially-secluded stretch of beach on the boundary with Santa Ana, whose white sands contrast with the grey beaches in the rest of Gonzaga.
- 4 Tallag Beach and Rock Formations, Casitan. A row of large rocks eroded by the wind and waves, resulting in peculiar formations, caves and tidal pools.
