Govardhan

Govardhan (गोवर्धन) or Giriraj (गिरिराज Girirāj) is a key pilgrimage site in Uttar Pradesh, India. Each year, Hindus make pilgrimage to Govardhan from different parts of India and beyond.

Understand

As the legend goes, the people of Vrindavan traditionally worships Indra as the lord of thunder. However, Krishna suggests them to honour the Govardhan hill instead as it supplies grass for cattle. This angers Indra, and he sends and intense rainstorm. Then Krishna picks up the hill and holds it above his head for seven days to protect the people from Indra's wrath.

Since Krishna declares that he and Govardhan is no different, the Vallabhacharya sect worships the hill, along with the Saligrama.
