Gwangyang

Gwangyang (광양시) is in South Jeolla on the south coast of South Korea. Positioned on the southern coast along Gwangyang Bay and bordered by Suncheon to the west and Hadong across the Seomjin River to the east, the city is best known as the heart of Korea's modern steel industry as well as the home of the country's earliest spring plum blossoms.

The city is globally recognized for POSCO's Gwangyang Steel Works, the largest single steel-producing facility in the world. Gwangyang was known as Mabi-hyeon during the Baekje period. In 757, during the Unified Silla period, it was renamed 희양 (Heiyang) and reorganized into a proper county structure. The area officially received its current name, Gwangyang, in 940 under the reign of King Taejo during the Goryeo dynasty. During the Joseon dynasty, Gwangyang served as an important coastal administrative and military center, though it temporarily lost its independent county status and was merged into Suncheon in 1895, before being re-established as Gwangyang County in 1896. In 1995, Gwangyang County and Dong-gwangyang City were merged to form the unified city of Gwangyang as it exists today. Gwangyang is well-linked by express and intercity buses from major cities. Regular buses run from Seoul’s Central City Bus Terminal (3-hr-40-min to 4-hr journey; fares from ₩34,700 to ₩45,100) and from Busan. Driving gives maximum flexibility: from Seoul, follow the expressway through Suncheon–Wanju, then Namhae Expressway, exiting at Gwangyang IC. A car is recommended if you plan to explore surrounding nature, go island-hopping, or travel with luggage.  

If you arrive via Yeosu Airport (when flights available), take a taxi or local transport from the airport to Gwangyang for a quick entry. This option suits travelers arriving by air and heading straight to Gwangyang or the southern coast.  

After arrival, local buses or taxis (including ride-hailing) can take you to accommodation, restaurants, or tourist spots. For exploring outer areas like mountains, coastlines, or remote villages, renting a car or using your own vehicle is more convenient.

Local intra-city buses (shinaebus) connect the primary urban areas of Gwangyang-eup and Jungma-dong with outlying townships and coastal industrial sites. Buses run frequently between Gwangyang-eup and Jungma-dong, but services to rural mountain valleys or coastal villages in Daap-myeon or Jinwol-myeon are less frequent. Inter-city bus routes also connect Gwangyang directly with neighboring cities like Suncheon and Yeosu.

Taxis are plentiful in urbanized areas like Gwangyang-eup, Jungma-dong, and near Gwangyang Port/Terminal areas. They are the most efficient option for traveling between the disconnected urban nodes or reaching remote trailhead locations.

Dockless electric bike-sharing services are available in the main urban areas of Gwangyang, including Gwangyang-eup and Jungma-dong. They provide a convenient option for short-distance travel or navigating areas with less frequent bus service.

When you reach your destination, manually slide the lock on the rear wheel to end the ride. Gwangyang maeshil (plum) – Gwangyang is Korea's largest producer of green plums (maeshil). Visitors can find fresh plums in spring, as well as processed products such as plum extract (maeshil-cheong), plum tea, plum wine, and plum pickles year-round.

Gwangyang sweet persimmons (Baekun persimmons) – Grown around the foot of Baekunsan Mountain, Gwangyang sweet persimmons and dried persimmons (gotgam) are famous for their high sugar content and crispy texture.

Gwangyang charcoal-grilled bulgogi & gizzard shad – While known as local culinary dishes, packaged local seasonings, marinated meats, and fresh seasonal seafood like jeoneo (gizzard shad) from Mangdeok Port are popular items to take home.

Gwangyang gim (dried seaweed) – Taeindo in Gwangyang is historical as the world's first commercial gim cultivation site (established in the 1600s). Local roasted and seasoned seaweeds remain a traditional specialty.
